Hello I am Karl Pratt
What are the elements of a successful Invention?
Necessity and Simplicity
This is my Story (Summer 1994)
I went out for a day at Lake Lewisville outside of Dallas, Texas like so many others do on a beautiful summer day. I had parked my truck and trailer in the parking area. After spending a wonderful day at the lake, I returned to load up and return home. I climbed into my truck and starting backing to the boat launch but then noticed something was missing - my trailer. Someone had stolen my trailer from my truck while I was enjoying my day. I started looking around and found the lock, cut, lying on the ground. After ranting and raving for a while, I started thinking about what I needed to do. I made a Police report, called the insurance company, and checked into storage for my boat. I had a large boat with a customized trailer so you can't just find a trailer anywhere, especially on short notice. My fun/expensive day at the lake was over. It was about a week of dealing with all the bureaucracy, a couple of months waiting for a trailer, and over $1,500.00 out of pocket expenses for deductibles and such. So, that was the start of my pursuit to prevent this from happening to myself and others. I had owned a manufacturing company for quite some time and had experience in metal, machining and applications. I created a product that would provide security while my truck and trailer was left unattended. After several modifications, I had a product that would have a dual purpose, safety while in transport, and security when it was parked. I felt that this product was needed but really didn't pursue it at that time. I kept using my own product and even built about 100 more, giving them to friends and colleagues. I never thought about the amount of incidents from trailers coming detached. Most people hear from friends or maybe something happened personally to them. No one seemed to realize widespread and just how serious this problem was. Thanks to the Internet and stumbling upon a website in January 2009 www.dangero
I found my mission and had the statistics that I needed to develop our company Safety Sentry Inc. Now a year after inception, we have several states recognizing that this product will prevent and reduce accidents and injuries from trailers becoming detached. We now have two states with active legislation already in effect which requires a "safety device" and 4 States starting legislation January 2010. I find this product very fulfilling for us at Safety Sentry Inc. for two reasons - protecting lives on our highways and protecting the property that we all work for every day.
